The early memorys was probably hearing Hawkwinds "silver machine" Blasting out of the tranny radio at home on those blissfully hot summers in the late sixties early seventies, then we brought an old mono record player and started getting in to the glam of the Seventies such as The Sweet, Slade and Wizard. At this time I was already listening to individua instruments and listening to what they were doing within a song. I then acquired a pair of drum sticks and started playing along to songs on anything I could hit. The end of the seventies saw my first gig at school with a couple of friends banging out rhythms on desks with myself trying to be the centre of attention, singing strange punk lyrics to a classroom full of greatly amused fifth year kids. A year after I had left school, myself along with Joe and Robin, started a band called the "Ozterz", a sort of indie punk band. Robin had made his own drum kit out of junk and bits of plastic container drums and also made my so called bass guitar from other scrap material from joe's father's warehouse, joe being the only one to own a real guitar. we eventually done one gig on a Chrismas Eve party in a carrot topping shed in an isolated Fenland village supporting a hardcore punk band called the "Prisoners of War", but it was a start. After a big learning curve we disbanded as Robin left the band and joined the RAF, whereas joe decided to enter a more established punk group known as
"Section A". This left myself to join various local and national bands to gain valuable experience in gigging and song writing skills.
top of pageTHE SOUND MAN
sound guy is one who participates in the flavour of music and all good things, a noise freak, techno head, propeller head maybe. Sound engineer, sound man, sound technician, producer. Being a gigging and recording musician for over 20 years helps and many hours of messing with sounds and frequencies along with plenty of mistakes to larger victories. If sounds could be colours, the mixing desk becomes a kind of aural paint palette for the engineer. Designed for routing a sound or sounds to any designated place. to enhance and add magical excitement and spice to the sound. shutting the eyes when listening will make sounds becomes more vividly directional and alive. the brain only then relies on one sense. The finished product must in most cases sound comparatively acceptable on tiny radio speakers to a big P.A. rig..
The first rule is - there are no rules, but you could only say that after many years of experience.
